Testimonials
"This was an excellent service. It has hugely helped me understand my issues, where they had developed from and why I ended up in the position I was. It has made a massive difference to my mental health, and feel like my usual self. Andy was friendly, supportive and easy to open up and talk to."
Consultant doctor, health sector
"I was initially concerned that CBT wouldn't help, but it was presented in a much clearer, and practical way than CBT I have had before. It helped me get to grips with myself, my own thought patterns and ethics and how to use and interpret them. The soundboard aspect has really helped me work through issues. 10/10"
Senior systems engineer, technology sector
"I feel Andy has been extremely understanding, kind and empathetic. He not only listens to my concerns, but has helped me unpick and realise the root cause of my worries and stressors. I feel confident in managing boundaries and my thought process more due to the work he has shown me and helped me to understand."

About Confident & Calm Therapy and Coaching
About me
My name is Andrew Stevenson. I am a fully qualified, BABCP-accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, working remotely and from my office in Birmingham. I also offer supervision.
I have worked in the NHS for 10 years and in private practice for five. Prior to that, I completed extensive psychology training, including a BSc (First Class Honours) and an MSc (Distinction), as well as specialist training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
I have also worked as a supervisor for other CBT practitioners for the past five years and am trained in EMDR.
How I work
If you are reading this, you are probably feeling stuck and frustrated, and I would like to help.
My approach is structured and focused. In our sessions, you can share your concerns and fears in a safe and confidential space, and I will work with you to understand what is going on.
We will then create a clear plan, put that into action, and focus on maintaining progress or preventing relapse, so that you can continue moving forward.
What you can expect
I use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the most evidence-based approach, and work with you to resolve problems as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Clients often describe me as down-to-earth, practical, and empowering. My aim is for you to leave therapy feeling more resilient, more confident, and better able to cope.
Experience
My experience means I have worked with a wide range of difficulties and supported people aged 18 to over 90, from a variety of backgrounds.
Much of my current work focuses on burnout.
A note on confidentiality
There is very little I have not heard before. If you feel nervous or unsure about sharing your concerns, please be assured that I will treat everything with the utmost discretion and without judgement.
My starting point is that people are doing their best to cope in difficult circumstances, and I will work alongside you.
Accreditation
I am an accredited member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), the governing body for this form of therapy.
This means I am bound by a code of professional practice and an ethical framework, similar to a doctor.

Building a clear understanding of what is driving pressure or burnout.
In the early sessions, we focus on:
• Identifying key sources of stress and responsibility

This creates a structured, practical understanding of the situation.
As you’ll find, I also like to get started quickly with alleviating distress, so I’ll be sharing techniques early.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between therapy and coaching?
Therapy focuses on understanding patterns, managing stress, and improving how you function over time. Coaching tends to be more forward-looking and focused on goals and performance.
In practice, the work I offer draws on both. It is structured and practical, grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), while also focusing on helping you move forward, make changes, and improve how you handle challenges day to day.
What kind of clients do you typically work with?
I mainly work with individuals who are functioning at a high level but experiencing significant pressure, stress, or burnout.
Many are in professional or leadership roles and are used to coping well, but are finding things increasingly difficult to sustain over time.
How practical is your approach?
My approach is active and structured.
You will have space to talk and feel understood, which is central to how I work. At the same time, I do not take a passive role. The focus is on understanding what is happening and making clear, realistic changes that improve how you function.
Where appropriate, I will offer guidance and draw on my experience to help move things forward.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on your situation, and I can give you an estimate if you would find that helpful.
Some people benefit from a relatively short piece of work, while others choose to continue for longer to consolidate changes or maintain progress.
I do not believe in unnecessarily extending therapy. My aim is to help you reach a point where you no longer need support for the same issue.
I am happy to offer ongoing coaching or support where it is useful, but the focus is on alleviating distress as quickly as possible and achieving lasting benefit.
Do I need to be in crisis to benefit from this?
Not at all.
Most people I work with are still functioning in their day-to-day lives, but are experiencing high levels of pressure, stress, or a sense that things are becoming unsustainable.
The work is often most effective before things reach a crisis point.
Are sessions online or in person?
Sessions can be held either online or in person, depending on your preference and availability.
What happens in the initial consultation?
I offer a brief initial consultation (up to 15 minutes).
This is an opportunity to outline what’s been going on and get a sense of whether this is the right type of support for you. If it feels like a good fit, we can then arrange a full session.
